Schlumberger and Cambridge Viscosity Collaborate to Determine Industry’s Interest in HPHT Fluid Viscosity Standards

Widespread industry participation in a recent High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) Viscosity Standards workshop indicates a significant interest by the industry in developing a fluid viscosity standards program. The workshop, held in early 2010, was part of a collaborative effort initiated by Schlumberger and Cambridge Viscosity to define and develop appropriate fluid viscosity standards for HPHT wells.

As a result of the workshop, the Schlumberger-Cambridge Viscosity Coalition concluded that now is the time to develop a viscosity standards program, which would include

  • multiple measurement techniques
  • involvement of the National Institute of Standards Technology and the International Association of Transport Properties.

The effort is expected to be completed within 3 to 4 years.

The purpose of the workshop was to provide the industry with current findings, determine the importance of the HPHT viscosity issue, and obtain input and support. The workshop included four presentations, followed by a roundtable panel discussion.
