Carbonates are naturally fractured reservoirs exhibiting substantial and unpredictable permeability variations. Permeability is also a function of reservoir stress level during the producing life of the well. For optimal production, one must understand the carbonate rock formation along the wellbore to ensure all productive zones are treated with appropriate stimulation technology.

Because naturally fractured reservoirs exhibit substantial and unpredictable permeability variations, the success of matrix treatment operations can be variable. During treatment, all or part of the acid may divert to a high-permeability interval, leaving the rest of the wellbore poorly stimulated. With an understanding of the carbonate rock formation along the wellbore, specific intervals can also be reopened using hydraulic fracturing techniques.

Long horizontal open holes and naturally fractured reservoirs have always been challenging for matrix treatment operations. Boreholes can intersect fractures along their length, and during treatment the treatment acid tends to be wasted in the first fractures encountered by the well or by other dominant thief zones, leaving significant sections without stimulation.
