Testing Productive Zones in Carbonates

Developing an optimal completion program requires an understanding of the flow characteristics deeper within the formation. It is therefore important to measure matrix and fracture permeability, as well as zonal communication.

Such measurements can be obtained with deployment of the MDT modular formation dynamics tester, or the drillpipe-conveyed StethoScope formation pressure-while-drilling (FPWD) service. Specific fracture networks that have been identified using borehole image logs, can also be isolated by the two inflatable packers of the MDT dual-packer module. This allows pressure measurement and fluid samples to be obtained to accurately characterize fluid gradients and improve understanding of fluid distribution in the carbonate formation. Petrophysical and borehole image data are used to accurately determine the zones to be tested.
