MDT Single-phase sampling

Phase diagram of a typical crude oil. Liquid hydrocarbon samples taken at reservoir temperature and pressure (A) can change phase at lower temperatures and pressures as they are brought to the surface (D). By overpressurizing the sample downhole (B), the sample will maintain its initial phase as it is brought to the surface (C) at lower temperature.

New PVT analysis opportunities
Accurate compositional and PVT analysis of formation samples require the recovered sample to remain in downhole formation conditions. The Oilphase Single Phase Multisample Chamber and the multisample module of the MDT Modular Formation Dynamics Tester are the answer.

The chamber allows for overpressuring the samples after they're removed from the reservoir. Sample chambers are pressurized across two pistons with a nitrogen gas chamber. This compensates for the temperature-induced pressure drop as the samples are returned to surface.

A PVT-quality single-phase fluid sample established the presence of producible hydrocarbons for a North Sea operator. This test occurred in a fault block characterized by partially consolidated formation, miscible drilling fluid invasion and water saturations from 40% to 50%.

The MDT tool, run in conjunction with the Single Phase Multisample Chamber, recovered two low-contamination monophasic samples.
The operator estimated recoverable reserves accurately with these high-quality samples. Also, monophasic PVT analysis offered the critical parameters for optimal completion and production design. MDT single-phase formation samples gave the necessary answers without the additional expense and environmental issues of drillstem tests.
