Unlike other systems, the GreenSlurry system is applicable to all offshore environments.
Earth-friendly GreenSlurry system for uniform marine performance
Overview
Meeting stringent environmental guidelines in both the U.K. North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), the new Schlumberger GreenSlurry system delivers consistent, earth-friendly performance. This slurry system, developed for use in all types of fracturing and gravel-packing operations in environmentally sensitive regions, features a unique carrier fluid. The new carrier fluid can be easily metered using all existing equipment.
Marine conformance
Data requirements for well treatment fluids and additives vary according to location, application and legislation, but may be based on the result of a single species test or a suite of tests. The Schlumberger earth-friendly slurry system is in compliance with the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) discharge regulations planned for the GOM (available at www.epa.gov).
The new fracturing gel has received the highest gold band rating for use in the North Sea, where requirements for use and discharge are considered by many to be the most demanding in the industry.
Well treatment fluids created from the new slurry system are also within MMS discharge requirements for stimulation fluids in the GOM. These requirements include
oil and grease limits of 42 mg/L maximum on a daily basis or 29 mg/L monthly average
absolutely no sheen, iridescence, gloss or increased reflectance.
For North Sea use, the slurry gel must pass these toxicity tests in addition to strict guidelines on bioaccumulation, such as
Acartia-tonsa
Skeletonema costatum
Sheepshead minnow.
The uniform design of the slurry allows it to be pumped in marine environments throughout the world and in other environmentally sensitive areas.
Fluid description
Ecologically sensitive fracturing fluids consist of a faster-hydrating (80% hydration within 2 to 3 min), high-yield polymer. Rate of hydration is independent of polymer loading.
Field performance
Laboratory tests have shown that the Schlumberger earth-friendly slurry system gave equivalent, and sometimes better, well performance than traditional fluids. The foam fluid halflife increased from 20 to 100% over other fluid systems.
This fluid system has undergone extensive testing in Schlumberger laboratories around the world and has given consistent and reliable results without failure. Since testing, the GreenSlurry system has been used exclusively in place of conventional slurries in the GOM and has also been introduced into the North Sea.
