SLB delivered a successful temporary P&A and sidetrack preparation on the Goliat E-2H well using advanced intervention technologies. The operation saved rig time, reduced costs, and minimized environmental impact while enhancing safety and operational efficiency. Vår Energi was highly satisfied with the outcome and the performance of SLB.

Vår Energi aimed to increase recovery from the Goliat field by accessing untapped reserves through a sidetrack from the existing Goliat E-2H well. The goal was to maintain the mainbore while adding a retrofit multilateral branch using a Level 5 multilateral system and Odin™ hydraulic flow control valves from SLB.

To achieve this, the mainbore needed to be temporarily suspended and the upper completion recovered. The candidate well’s horizontal section was 200 m longer than other producers in the field, presenting unique challenges. The customer also sought to streamline operations, reduce HSE exposure, and ensure well integrity and data acquisition throughout the intervention.

SLB deployed a suite of advanced technologies and an optimized workflow to meet the objectives efficiently:

Multiline unit: Enabled simultaneous wireline and slickline operations from a single unit, reducing offshore personnel from 12 to 8 and improving logistics and cost-efficiency.

Crown plug retrieval: The StreamLine iX™ extreme-performance polymer-locked wireline cable eliminated cable swaps and saved 12 hours of rig time. Its torque-balanced design reduced pressure control complexity and environmental risks.

Combined plug and punch: SLB integrated the slot cutter of the ReSOLVE iX™ intelligent extreme wireline intervention service with the plug setting BHA and used the TuffTRAC iX™ intelligent extreme wireline tractor to perform both operations in a single run, saving additional rig time and reducing CO₂ emissions.

Tubing cutting: The ReSOLVE iX tubing cutter delivered a clean, precise cut on compressed 5.5-in tubing in a deviated section—an operation that had previously failed using other methods. Downhole confirmation eliminated the need for contingency runs.

Contingency technologies: SLB mobilized the high-resolution dual caliper of Reveal™ wireline surveillance solutions, the anchor‑linear actuator of the ReSOLVE™ instrumented wireline intervention service, and the ReSOLVE milling active cleanout tool to ensure well integrity and address potential issues.

“The innovative SLB use of intervention technologies and seamless execution helped us achieve our objectives efficiently and reliably. Their performance on Goliat E-2H has set a new standard for future operations.”
