Taking Geothermal Beyond Boundaries

Today, at less than 1% of global energy supplies, there is an untapped potential for clean, reliable energy. Though solar and wind have dominated the renewable energy sector, geothermal has become cost competitive to wind and solar, with a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) that continues to decrease. Investments in new or fit-for-geothermal technologies and application of existing oil and gas technologies are paying off in improved economics for developers during greenfield project development, as well as operators during production enhancement, workovers, and other brownfield activities.

Next generation technologies such as enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and advanced geothermal systems (AGS) are broadening geologic opportunities for this renewable energy source, bringing it closer to customers, providing local energy security, and doing it with a footprint that is multiples smaller than other renewable energy sources.

At SLB, we’ve provided solutions and services to the geothermal industry for decades, whether traditional hydrothermal, next generation, direct use or for heating and cooling.  And we’re constantly improving our technologies and approaches to encourage geothermal adoption more broadly by lowering exploration risks, improving drilling efficiencies, and enhancing production for existing investments. At SLB, we’re dedicated to helping customers break down the boundaries that are holding projects and operations back.

Geothermal power

Working in the subsurface for more than 100 years, SLB is proud to be a part of 80% of the world’s geothermal power projects. Our GeothermEx™ geothermal consulting services cover the full spectrum of geothermal operations. We also leverage our digital, well construction, and field development expertise and fit-for-purpose technologies to plan and execute your project. Together, we’ll make sustainable energy accessible.

A chart of geothermal energy capacity by country
The ~17 GW of geothermal power currently installed is just the tip of the iceberg—the global capacity potential is estimated by IHS Markit to be nearly 20× more. (Source: ThinkGeoEnergy Research, 2022)

Geothermal heating and cooling

Geothermal energy also brings powerful solutions to heat and cool in a whole new way. A form of shallow geothermal energy—called geoenergy—provides low-carbon heating and cooling for buildings.

About 70% of the thermal energy a building needs is waiting to be uncovered right below us. Tapping into this geoenergy takes tools to access it and the expertise to make it reality. Our Celsius Energy™ geoenergy heating and cooling solution uses advanced technologies to maximize heating and cooling for buildings. Together, we can harness this sustainable energy source and reduce your overall energy consumption and emissions.
