GeoServices mud logging and well intervention

Mud logging, surface gas analysis, digital slickline, safety valve, and multiphase metering capabilities associated with GeoServices continue within the SLB portfolio.

Geoservices Technology Overview

GeoServices was a global provider of mud logging, surface gas analysis, and well intervention services. In 2010, SLB completed its acquisition of GeoServices for USD 1.1 billion. Today, related capabilities are available across SLB surface logging, well intervention, completions, and surface multiphase flowmetering portfolios.

About GeoServices

GeoServices was founded in France in 1958 by Gaston Redilly with Edouard Cochet, Olivier Issenman, and Francis Meil with the goal of becoming a global oilfield service company focused on geology. The company expanded across Europe, Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia and, by 2010, operated in 64 countries with more than 2,000 employees.

GeoServices became known for mud logging, surface gas analysis, and well intervention. Its technologies included the ALS5000 mud logging system, Constant Volume Degasser, Reserval quantitative gas measurement service, Flair fluid logging service, and GEM Line intelligent slickline. GeoServices also developed electromagnetic telemetry for measurements while drilling, downhole safety valves, multiphase flowmeters, and downhole gauges.

In 2010, SLB completed its USD 1.1 billion acquisition of GeoServices. Today, related capabilities continue across the SLB portfolio. Surface logging solutions support well monitoring, mud logging, formation evaluation, and real-time fluid characterization while drilling. Digital slickline intervention enables two-way downhole communication, measurement, and control using standard slickline conveyance. SLB completions and surface testing technologies also support subsurface safety and multiphase flow measurement.

Frequently asked questions about GeoServices

Which SLB services carry GeoServices mud logging and surface gas analysis?

The SLB surface logging portfolio carries these capabilities through core mud logging, SurfaceSafe™ digital drilling monitoring solutions, PureFlex™ surface fluids logging-while-drilling service, FlairFlex™ advanced real-time fluid logging and analysis service, isotope logging, and automated lithology analysis.

How do PureFlex and FlairFlex services support fluid analysis while drilling?

PureFlex service analyzes C1 to C5 hydrocarbons at surface while removing common drilling fluid contaminants and effects caused by drillbit metamorphism. FlairFlex service adds real-time formation evaluation and reservoir fluid characterization using surface gas extraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry.

What SLB capability succeeds the GeoServices GEM Line intelligent slickline?

SLB digital slickline intervention uses a coated slickline cable for two-way communication with downhole tools. The service supports real-time depth correlation, measurement, and control while retaining standard slickline conveyance and pressure control equipment.

Where are GeoServices safety valve and multiphase metering capabilities available today?

Subsurface safety valve capabilities are available through the SLB completion portfolio, including GeoGuard™ DW deepwater high-performance subsurface safety valves. Multiphase metering is available through the Vx Spectra™ surface multiphase flowmeter for continuous oil, gas, and water flow rate measurement without separation.

Can operators still buy technology under the GeoServices name?

No. GeoServices capabilities are now offered through current SLB product and service portfolios rather than under the former company brand. Availability depends on the required application and region; contact the relevant SLB surface logging, well intervention, completions, or surface testing team.
