SLB is proud to support the revitalization of hydrocarbon exploration in Sri Lanka by offering the West Mannar Basin MC2D seismic survey. Final data products are now available for licensing.
Covering approximately 6,403 line km, this high-resolution, broadband seismic survey focuses on the heart of Sri Lanka’s most promising offshore petroleum province. Located along the same geologic trend as regional discoveries in the Cauvery Basin (Dorado and Barracuda), the West Mannar MC2D survey presents a rare opportunity to explore a proven yet underexplored hydrocarbon system.
Two vintages of 2D seismic data are available in the West Mannar, a 2021 reprocessing and a 2018 new acquisition. The dataset delivers depth-calibrated seismic volumes and AVO-compliant products to support confident prospect identification and reduce exploration risk.
Modern imaging techniques reveal structural and stratigraphic features, especially under the regional basalt, making the West Mannar MC2D dataset ideally suited to helping unlock the next phase of offshore exploration. Expanding the frontier to the east with an untested deepwater basin
The East Lanka Basin is largely unexplored and has no well penetrations in the deepwater. Spanning the underexplored East Coast of Sri Lanka, this dataset presents a rare opportunity to tap into a frontier petroleum system. The area is backed by strong indicators of hydrocarbon potential, including potential direct hydrocarbon indicators (DHIs) and shallow gas anomalies.
SLB offers approximately 5,020 line km of new 2D seismic acquisition of 2018 vintage in the East Lanka Basin with high-resolution imaging of potential structural and stratigraphic traps. Utilizing 10,500 m of long-offset, 2D seismic, the data showcases varied trapping geometries and significant reservoir potential within Cretaceous to Cenozoic clastic formations.

SLB is delivering ExploreCube intelligence volumes, that transform sparse 2D seismic data into high-resolution pseudo-3D volumes using AI and machine learning (ML).
These volumes enable explorers to:
36,635 km2 of ExploreCube intelligence volumes are available for the West Mannar Basin and 51,568 km2 are available for the East Lanka Basin—generated from 11,423 line km of 2D seismic data. 3D data is only available in the West Mannar and the coverage is minimal. There is no 3D coverage in the East Lanka region.
To enhance the utility of existing 2D imaging data, a hybrid approach integrates deterministic interpolation with deep learning techniques, guided by geological priors. This method generates denser, non-linear projections that yield geologically plausible volumes, tailored to the quality and availability of current data and metadata. The ML workflow is calibrated to ensure convergence at known data points, faithfully preserving the integrity of the input 2D seismic lines.
The Sri Lankan pseudo-3D volumes offer a practical solution to the limitations of multi-vintage 2D seismic data. This enables the generation of seismic attribute volumes at both play and basin scales, accelerating regional interpretation and exploration screening.
