During the onshore drilling of an 8½-in hole section with high dogleg severity (DLS), the Mudgard Pro™ combination inline filter and magnet successfully protected the BHA from both magnetic and nonmagnetic debris. This enabled the operator to reach a target depth of 28,688-ft MD without any debris-related NPT.

Onshore United States, a major operator faced significant challenges protecting the BHA while drilling in a debris-contaminated fluid system. Earlier attempts with low-tier filter technologies allowed debris bypass, caused erosion, and led to tool failures and costly NPT. Consequently, the operator required a robust downhole filter solution capable of withstanding high DLS, capturing both magnetic and nonmagnetic debris, and ensuring uninterrupted operation of MWD and RSS components.

The Mudgard Pro combination inline filter and magnet was integrated into the BHA for the 8½-in-in hole section, enabling the operator to execute an aggressive curve-to-lateral drilling plan and reach a target depth of 28,688-ft MD with zero debris-related NPT. This advanced tool effectively prevented debris migration to the MWD and RSS components, ensuring uninterrupted steering control. The robust design delivered high debris collection capacity, erosion resistance, and throughbore access for contingency applications, making it a superior alternative to legacy filters. Upon disassembly, the Mudguard Pro combination inline filter and magnet captured a total of 3.5 lbm of ferrous debris and 6.5 lbm of nonferrous debris.
