The Intelligent Production Studio brings AI, automation and connected production systems together in a real-world operating environment
The energy industry is exploring new ways to improve production performance, strengthen operational reliability and address workforce constraints across increasingly complex assets. As organizations pursue those goals, attention is shifting from individual digital tools toward integrated systems capable of monitoring conditions, analyzing data and coordinating responses across production operations.
Advances in artificial intelligence, edge computing, connected equipment and automation are accelerating that transition. What once required separate systems and manual intervention can now be managed through connected workflows that bring together equipment, software and operational intelligence to support faster, more coordinated decision making ahead of time.
To help customers and partners understand how these technologies work together in practice, SLB recently opened the Intelligent Production Studio in Houston. More than 100 customers and partners visited the facility during the SLB Production and Recovery Summit, gaining firsthand exposure to technologies that are helping reshape production and recovery operations.
Bringing Physical and Digital Operations Together
At the heart of the Intelligent Production Studio is a fully autonomous well pad that manages real three-phase flow of oil, water and gas across multiple well streams. Rather than serving as a simulation or conceptual demonstration, the studio operates as a physical environment where production equipment and digital technologies are integrated into a unified workflow.
The studio combines production equipment, flow measurement technologies, chemical and gas injection systems and autonomous robotic operations into a single operating environment. Technologies on display include the Electris™ interval control valve, Adapt™ compact wellhead systems, Modum Chem™ chemical injection metering control system, Modum Gas™ gas metering control system and Vx Spectra™ surface multiphase flowmeters.
These technologies are connected through digital solutions including Agora™ edge AI and IoT solutions, Avalon™ real-time surveillance and OptiFlow™ production assurance solutions.
This enables continuous monitoring, anomaly detection and coordinated operational responses across the production system. Visitors can observe how data moves across the system, how anomalies are detected and how digital technologies drive coordinated operational execution. The result is a practical demonstration of how autonomous, connected systems can improve production performance.
Evaluating New Technologies Before Field Deployment
Many of the industry's most advanced digital technologies are deployed in remote or operationally complex environments, making it difficult for customers to experience them firsthand or for teams to receive hands-on training before deployment.
The Intelligent Production Studio was developed to help address that challenge. By providing an environment that reflects real operating conditions, the facility allows customers and partners to observe how integrated systems behave in practice, evaluate workflows and gain familiarity with technologies before they are implemented in the field.
As organizations continue to adopt AI-enabled and autonomous solutions, opportunities to validate performance and build confidence before deployment can help reduce operational risk and accelerate adoption.
Supporting the Future of Production Operations
The industry continues to face pressure to improve production efficiency, reduce operating costs, enhance safety and lower emissions while managing increasingly complex assets. Artificial intelligence, automation and connected infrastructure are creating new opportunities to address those challenges by improving operational visibility, accelerating decision making and enabling more coordinated execution across production systems.
The Intelligent Production Studio provides an environment where those capabilities can be experienced in practice. In addition to serving as a venue for customer engagement and training, the facility will support collaboration around future integrated production solutions and provide a setting where organizations can evaluate emerging technologies. More broadly, it reflects the industry's continued movement toward more connected, data-driven and autonomous production operations.
