Complex energy projects are driving new approaches to development execution

Large-scale energy projects are changing how operators approach development planning and execution across the asset lifecycle. Offshore tiebacks, mature asset redevelopment and infrastructure-heavy projects are creating tighter dependencies between drilling, facilities and production startup while increasing pressure to maintain schedule and cost predictability.

In response, operators are placing greater focus on development approaches that improve coordination across disciplines and reduce fragmentation between project phases.

“Delivering production-ready wells means addressing the full scope required to bring assets online, not only drilling and completion, but also facilities, logistics and production connections,” said Gokhan Yarim, senior vice president of Integration. “Treating these elements as part of one development plan helps minimize delays and improves execution certainty.”

Reducing fragmentation across the asset lifecycle

Traditional development models often separate drilling, completions, facilities and production into distinct phases managed across multiple providers and teams. As projects become more operationally interconnected, operators are seeking approaches that improve alignment across those activities and reduce the operational interfaces that can complicate execution.

Integrated development approaches are designed to align planning, execution and production readiness under a more unified delivery structure. Rather than focusing on individual project phases independently, the approach emphasizes coordination across disciplines throughout the development process.

The model is becoming more relevant in mature basins and infrastructure-heavy operating environments, where production systems are often tightly connected and delays in one area can affect broader project execution. In these environments, operators are placing greater emphasis on coordination, accountability and continuity across the asset lifecycle.

Production readiness becomes a larger focus

Production readiness is also becoming a larger consideration earlier in the development process. Rather than treating drilling, facilities and production startup as separate operational milestones, operators are increasingly evaluating how those activities align as part of a broader development plan.

The shift is also influencing how operators approach long-term asset management. Connecting development planning with production optimization and recovery planning earlier in the lifecycle can help improve continuity across producing assets over time.

At the same time, flexibility remains central to integrated development models. Depending on the operating environment, operators may pursue fully integrated delivery structures or more targeted approaches focused on specific operational or production challenges.

As projects become more interconnected, integrated development approaches are taking on a larger role in how operators plan, deliver and manage complex energy assets.
