The IRJ system combines a below tension ring rotating control device (BTR‑RCD), an SLA, and a flowline spool within a single riser joint. This unified configuration is designed for simplified installation below the telescopic joint on drillships and semisubmersible rigs. By integrating these critical components, the IRJ system streamlines offshore well control setup, enhances operational efficiency, and helps ensure safer, more reliable MPD operations.

How it improves performance

The IRJ operates via an advanced surface control system connected to the IRJ with a single umbilical, ensuring seamless and unified management. This integrated approach eliminates potential equipment incompatibility by consolidating control and monitoring functions, offering a single point of contact for all MPD activities. Operators benefit from faster, more coordinated responses to any MPD-related event, streamlining wellsite decision making and enhancing operational efficiency.

How it works

During standard drilling operations, the BTR-RCD establishes a closed-loop circulating system from the riser annulus to the surface equipment, ensuring effective management of wellbore fluids. The integrated flow spool incorporates a dual gooseneck flowline configuration, enabling appropriate routing of wellbore fluids to accommodate the specific requirements of each operation.

When the sealed rotating system (SRS) is not installed or requires replacement, the SLA serves as an alternative active sealing solution to the BTR-RCD, maintaining well control integrity. The IRJ, alongside all connected surface equipment, is managed from a unified control platform through the @balance Control™ MDP systems. This centralized setup enables operators to seamlessly switch between conventional drilling, MPD, or riser gas handling (RGH) operations as needed. The result is enhanced operational flexibility, improved drilling practices, and reduced NPT at the wellsite.
