Proprietary software prevents more than USD 190,000 in fluid losses

An operator chose PressPro RT™ real-time downhole performance measurement software to model and subsequently monitor casing running hydraulics. The goal was to ensure that the equivalent circulating density (ECD) limit was not exceeded. The software proved effective, preventing more than USD 190,000 being lost to fluid formation losses.

An operator in Saudi Arabia historically encountered fluid losses when running the 13⅜-in casing in an onshore field. A casing running solution was required to provide accurate downhole hydraulics analysis and guidance through the well construction process.

SLB recommended its PressPro RT software for its ability to identify potential challenges during well planning, enabling proactive risk management, and dynamic adjustments during drilling operations to ensure optimal performance.

The software was trialed in one well, and the 13⅜-in casing was run from 6,993 ft to 8,452 ft without encountering any fluid losses—a significant improvement compared with offset wells. The operator saved USD 193,000 that would have otherwise been lost to formation fluid losses.

This success can be attributed to the implementation of best practices provided by the PressPro RT software. Prior to running casing, the software modeled the casing run hydraulics to establish optimal procedures; subsequently, it continuously monitored the casing run using a real-time hydraulics model. This real-time monitoring allowed precise estimation of downhole pressures based on data from the rig, ensuring that the ECD limit was not exceeded.
