In-country development of thermal liner hanger system expedites steam-assisted EOR
SLB teams leveraged in-country resources to upgrade Colossus™ liner hanger systems for thermal applications, streamlining costs while reducing lead time by 6 months.
While initiating a steam-injection-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) program, an operator in Oman required installation of a 7-in liner hanger system capable of withstanding thermal cycling and sustained temperatures up to 600 degF [315 degC]. Fulfilling this request necessitated development of a new liner hanger and liner top packer—encompassing design, material sourcing, qualification, and manufacturing—within a short time frame of just 4 months. In addition to avoiding the extended lead time typically associated with manufacturing, qualifying, and testing new technology, the solution had to be commercially competitive. A repeatable and industrialized approach for deployment across multiple wells was also key.
SLB implemented a rapid response development strategy by leveraging qualified Colossus liner hanger systems available in‑country. These systems were converted to thermal service through targeted upgrades to high-temperature seal stacks and sealing systems, supported by elastomer elements qualified for 600-degF steam exposure and thermal cycling. Engineering teams worked in coordination with operations and supply chain to complete design validation, material selection, sourcing, and conversion procedures within the compressed schedule. All modifications and final assembly activities were executed locally while ensuring compliance with SLB quality standards, resulting in cost-efficiency and early delivery.
The high-temperature Colossus system was subsequently deployed in the first hot oil producer (HOP) of the campaign. This successful outcome enabled the operator to proceed with its program while boosting the SLB portfolio for steam-assisted and thermal recovery projects.
