Challenge

The need is clear—for the world to deliver net zero by 2050, low carbon energy sources need to be scaled up rapidly. Scaling these diverse energy sources and integrating them into new energy systems requires careful technical and economic planning and assessment of risk.

Digital technology has a critical role to play in this scale up, by helping design and de-risk low carbon energy planning and operations, and in optimizing these integrated energy systems. Schlumberger digital technologies are already helping customers plan and deliver geothermal, hydrogen and offshore wind projects.

Geothermal

SLB has been supporting customers with digital technology and services to explore, develop, and operate geothermal projects around the world for over 30 years. From natural fracture prediction and 3D flow simulation to surface facility design, our proven technologies enable you to quantify the performance and risks associated with geothermal resources and build an holistic development plan. SLB's expert geothermal consultants in our GeothermEx team have been involved in over 70% of the world’s commercial geothermal projects. Together with our digital technologies we can work with you to optimize your development plan.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen has huge potential in the energy industry; it is a path for heavy industries to decarbonize, and an energy carrier and storage medium. Enabling hydrogen to scale over the coming decades requires integrated digital planning and operation systems that can help reduce risk and improve efficiency.

Our Symmetry process simulation software offers full life cycle process design for both blue and green hydrogen production. From hydrogen generation—whether reforming or electrolysis technology—through to conversion to fuel cells or complemented with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), you can model your hydrogen safety processes alongside your system design, to efficiently manage planning and operations.

Offshore wind

From design to operation, offshore wind farms take many years to bring online. A critical part of this process is careful assessment for siting offshore wind turbines, making sure to avoid shallow geohazards, cable route optimization, and wake effects. Optimum siting requires a detailed understanding of the shallow subsurface and the integration of numerous different data types to build a complete picture of risk.

SLB subsurface interpretation and modelling technology has been developed over the last 25 years to offer customers best-in-class domain science. In the offshore wind space this means robust domain conversions through to full integration of cone penetration test data to make full 3D strength models of the subsurface that can enable confident decisions for optimal siting of wind turbine foundations and cables. Combined with the latest advances in AI and automation, our technology can accelerate site assessment time and reduce the time to first power.
