A family legacy stitched in blue
My journey with SLB began long before I officially became an employee.
It started with my father, who joined the company in 1947 at the age of 16. From that moment, the blue coverall became an integral part of our family’s history, shaping our lives and providing opportunities that transformed our future.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the impact SLB had on our family.
My father often spoke about the stability, dignity, and sense of belonging the company provided. He was proud to be part of it, and that pride became something he passed on to all of us.
My elder sister joined SLB at 17 and served for 35 years. My brother joined in 1992 and completed 30 years of dedicated service in Baghdad. In 1993, I followed in their footsteps. Between the three of us, we have accumulated nearly a century of combined experience with the company.
I still vividly remember the first day. My father handed me a uniform and said: “Always be proud of wearing the blue coverall.”
Rarely a day goes by that I don’t think about that simple statement. Some days, I think about it more than others.
One of those days was in 1996, when a visiting Vice President arrived on a site where I was working. As I rushed to help him with his bag, he stopped me and said:
“At SLB, we all work for one company; we don’t work for each other. I appreciate your hospitality, but in our workplace, we are all equals—each with different levels of approvals and responsibilities.”
Those words defined the culture of equality and respect that I’ve always admired.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed SLB evolve through growth, challenges, and transformation. Yet one thing has never changed: the company’s unwavering respect for its people.
In 2002, while on assignment in Syria, I received an urgent call from the Managing Director. He advised me to move my family out of Iraq due to rising tensions. I trusted his judgment and that decision proved lifesaving.
My father passed away in 2007 after an extraordinary 60-year career. He worked faithfully until his final day—a testament to his dedication and love for the company he believed in.
This year marks my 33rd anniversary with SLB. Every time I put on the blue coverall, I feel the same pride my father felt decades ago.
To my family, SLB has never been just a company. It has been a legacy, a source of opportunity, resilience, dignity, and belonging across generations.
