The energy industry is as vital to our society as the water we drink. It’s essential to progress, bringing with it a diversity of technology, culture, and geography that’s hard to beat.

Today, we face a dual challenge: meeting ever-growing global demand while enabling an equitable transition to lower-carbon sources. This isn’t just a technical problem; it’s a leadership challenge that demands resilience, adaptability, and vision.

My own journey through this industry has taught me more lessons than I can recount. Over time, those “small” lessons have grown into foundational principles.

“Patience doesn’t mean slowing down; it means knowing when to push and when to step back.”
– Ross Lowdon

I’ve learned, for example, that inspiration and attention to detail are not mutually exclusive. In my early days as a hydrographic surveyor and later as a GPS project manager, precision was paramount. But while our work may be rigorous, it’s also in constant movement, evolving in accordance with our communities and environments. Being open-minded is key.

My time as a wellbore survey specialist, and later leading domain strategy, continued confirming these values, ultimately reinforcing another truth I hold dear: that diversity of thought drives innovation.

SLB’s multicultural nature fosters flexibility, enabling us to create new solutions even in markets perceived as commoditized. But technical expertise alone is not enough, I found out. Patience (something I’m still learning) is just as multi-layered and indispensable a skill.

Patience doesn’t mean slowing down; it means knowing when to push and when to step back. This balance has been critical in my leadership journey and how I treat my mental health—a personal achievement that has produced profound benefits for my work and relationships.

As an SLB Fellow (the highest internal nod to one's technical prowess), I believe our industry must embrace a mindset that holds these values in tension. The fast-evolving energy and adjacent technology space will create opportunities that only organizations with depth, flexibility, and creativity can unlock.

SLB’s technical strength and cultural diversity are our secret sauce. Harnessing these qualities will allow us to not only compete but also lead in shaping a sustainable energy future—for another 100 years to come.
