Revealing the stories of the subsurface
I’ve always been naturally curious and inquisitive. As a child, my favorite book was “How Things Work,” which explains in very simple terms the science and mechanics behind natural phenomena, objects, and technology.
Years later, as a field engineer, I found myself driven by the same curiosity, trying to understand why geophysical logs react the way they do to different formation properties and fluids. I wanted to know what it is within the rocks and fluids that influences these measurements.
This desire ultimately sparked my journey into geoscience—and what an innovative one it’s been.
Quanta Geo is a storyteller.
Through its high-resolution images, it reveals the geological history that has shaped our present. We can trace the story of the subsurface across different geological eras, examining the detailed millimeter-scale features that reveal the broader context of how these layers were formed. We can observe, for instance, the ancient paths of rivers and channels, gaining insight into the processes that created the formations we encounter today.
In Asia Pacific, we’ve been using Quanta Geo to identify various depositional settings that, when combined with petrophysical data, give insights on reservoir quality, paleocurrent directions, and possible reservoir geometry. It sounds like magic, but it quickly becomes reality the moment that reservoir geometry is validated by production tests, such as pressure responses to deep transient testing.
The integration of these static and dynamic analyses has already delivered—in a reduced timeframe, might I add—critical evaluations of well producibility and minimum hydrocarbon-connected volume. It’s because of this that Quanta Geo continues to fascinate me. It continues to open the door to advanced geological applications that were previously impossible in oil-based mud.
What I love about Quanta Geo, though, are the moments of visual clarity that it provides. Whether identifying natural fractures, detecting thin beds, or optimizing well placement, it provides the geological context for our customers’ success.
