SmartSpin wireless rod rotator sensor

Confirm rod rotation automatically—no guesswork at the wellsite

Rod rotators have been used for decades as a solution to extend rod life in rod lift systems by distributing the surface wear of the rod versus being isolated to one side. But one of the biggest challenges with rotators is being able to confirm that proper rod rotation is taking place, which can be particularly hard to do by sight, especially at slow speeds or during idling.

The SmartSpin™ wireless rod rotator sensor offers an effective solution to confidently confirm your rod rotator is working properly with quick deployment and flexible integration into existing equipment.

  • Rod pump wells
  • Retrofits on existing rotators
  • New wells needing fast, wireless installs

Designed for retrofit and long-life field use

  • Polished-rod clamp mount
  • Analog/digital I/O to RTU for status and alarms
  • SCADA-agnostic host integration
  • Telemetry system sends status updates every 15–30 minutes.
  • Optional rotation velocity readout

The clamp-on sensor connects wirelessly to a receiver antenna at the RTU radio. Leveraging a proprietary sleep/wake sensing methodology, the SmartSpin sensor “wakes up” every 15–30 minutes to report data and then goes back to sleep. The data reports out the health of the rod rotator, including rotation status and communications status. If desired, you can use an additional analog input to view the rotation velocity to confirm how fast the rods are rotating.
