With over 13 years of dedicated service at SLB, Staff Scientist Subhasis De exemplifies expertise in chemistry that drives solutions for some of the oilfield’s toughest production challenges. Subhasis started his scientific journey at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in India, followed by earning a PhD in organic chemistry from Wake Forest University, North Carolina. His postdoctoral research in medicinal chemistry took place at the University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of Houston, providing him with an exceptional foundation in molecular design and problem solving.
Subhasis joined SLB in 2012 as a Senior Chemist and has progressed to his current role as Staff Scientist. While transitioning from medicinal chemistry to oilfield chemistry represented a major industry shift, Subhasis maintained a consistent scientific approach: “Whether designing molecules for heart disease treatment or for preventing corrosion, scale, and organic deposition in oilfield production systems, my guiding principle is the same—identify the root cause and create the chemistry solution that addresses it.”
He has pioneered combination chemical technologies at SLB, notably leading the development of an innovative triple-action formulation that mitigates scale, corrosion, and hydrogen sulfide in a single solution. Now deployed in the Permian Basin, this integrated chemistry addresses three major production risks simultaneously, delivering substantial operational and environmental benefits. The triple-action concept arose from field insights where multiple individual products were often used for the same system. By consolidating these chemistries, Subhasis and his team improved operational efficiency while maintaining high technical standards.
Subhasis remarked: “Developing our triple combination solution required rigorous compatibility testing, performance optimization, and stability assurance. Early field trials demonstrated strong results, paving the way for a unified approach to pipeline protection—one that improves cost efficiency and helps reduce carbon emissions.”
Currently, as part of SLB’s New Product Development team in the sustainability group, Subhasis is focused on advancing environmentally responsible chemistries. He is driving innovation through both the adaptation of proven technologies and the development of new proprietary molecules, keeping SLB at the forefront of chemical solutions for the evolving global energy sector.
