An operator was encountering low ROP, rapid cutter wear, and multiple bit trips while drilling extended-reach laterals in a hard and abrasive carbonate formation. Deploying an 8½-in AxeBlade™ ridged diamond element bit enabled the operator to drill a lateral section of >3,000 m [>10,000 ft] in a single run, eliminating at least two bit trips, while more than doubling ROP compared with the offset average.

The project required accurately placed extended-reach laterals, but the tight, fractured limestone-dolomite presented significant challenges. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 80–180 MPa was leading to rapid bit degradation and slow penetration rates.

Previous drilling campaigns in this formation had required multiple bit trips and achieved low ROPs, increasing well construction time and costs, and the operator sought a robust solution for the economic and technical success of the project.

SLB and the operator collaborated to deploy an 8½-in AxeBlade bit, featuring a multigeometry cutting structure that incorporated Axe™ ridged diamond elements, Axe SR™ scribe-ridged diamond elements, Stinger™ conical diamond elements, and thermal-resistant diamond cutting elements. This design provided aggressive shearing, improved cutting initiation, enhanced thermal durability, and concentrated point loading, enabling efficient drilling through the hard, abrasive carbonate.

The new bit drilled an entire 3,176-m lateral section in a single run, eliminating at least two additional trips. It also achieved 111% increase in ROP compared with the offset average, maintaining consistent penetration rates across the long, abrasive interval. This performance saved an estimated 142 hours of drilling time and avoided 32 hours of trip time, significantly reducing well construction costs. Additionally, the bit’s durability and stable drilling mechanics improved operational predictability and reduced risk, providing the operator with a reliable solution.

Bar graph comparing ROP, bit runs, and interval drilled per run by previous bits vs. AxeBlade bit.
A single AxeBlade bit drilled the entire 3,176-m interval in a single run, at a record ROP of 25 m/h [82 ft/h], greatly exceeding offset well performance.
