Enhancing operational efficiency: PDO’s digital transformation in operations

Through implementation of DrillOps™ performance insights and Techlog™ drilling interpretation in their Digital Wells Operation Center (WOC), Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has achieved operational time savings of 3% for drilling in well construction and approximately 7% in well workover entries..

PDO has large scale operations with 51 rigs and 49 hoists, performing operational drilling over 800 wells and over 2300 hoist workovers annually. They have faced operational challenges related to stuck pipe and washouts, and a value leak of USD 70 million due to invisible lost time (ILT). To overcome these challenges PDO chose to implement a digital WOC to provide 24/ 7 operational monitoring and to follow a policy of integrating people, process, and technology to optimize operations.

The digital WOC was established in phases, initially DrillOps performance insights was implemented to enable live benchmarking and comparison of KPI’s between operations. This was followed by real-time monitoring, advancing the capabilities of the system further.

To enhance operational monitoring advanced technologies, including Techlog drilling interpretation, were implemented, providing actionable real-time insights. PDO have also implemented processes, such as an impact matrix and communication protocols, to ensure structured real-time monitoring, which has facilitated swift decision making and risk mitigation. DrillOps performance insights has been utilized to monitor operational units’ KPIs against planned targets and actual hours saved, which can be linked to cost monitoring.

The WOC now covers 100% of PDO’s drilling rigs and 70% of workover activities.

In terms of value realization the WOC’s KPIs are tracked daily using an automated dashboard delivered through DrillOps performance insights. Since its inception, the WOC has achieved a 3% saving of well construction time for drilling and approximately 7% in well workover entry time.
