Background

When a major operator discovered that a mud pit had a significant solids accumulation that demanded removal, Schlumberger was requested to apply ATC automatic tank-cleaning technology. Because HSE is at the forefront for the operator, the objectives were to reduce confined space entry as compared with manual methods and keep cleaning time to a minimum. Manual methods to remove the high volume of pit waste would have taken upward of 72 h per pit.
