Det norske and SLB integrated drilling, reservoir characterization, and completions disciplines by establishing a team to conduct early and extended project engagement that achieved or exceeded all predrilling milestones and delivered twice as many wells as planned during development of the Ivar Aasen Field.

Develop North Sea field following established timeline

Det norske operates the Ivar Aasen Field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Ivar Aasen is Det norske's first significant, large-scale field development. For optimal project delivery, it was important to establish clear operational milestones. The goal set out by Det norske was to operate the best-performing rig on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).

Promote operational synergies and efficiencies through integration to achieve or exceed significant project milestones

In this project, a "one team" approach was implemented, meaning that all team members were encouraged to be proactive, share information across disciplines, and take ownership of and pride in the project. To improve communications and efficiency, key SLB personnel were integrated into the Det norske office, working alongside the operator's drilling and wells and subsurface teams. In a similar manner, senior field personnel were assigned to work offshore alongside Det norske and rig personnel. Drilling analysts provided additional operational support from the office. The broad scope of work required support from many SLB disciplines, including project management, drilling and measurements, bits and drilling tools, fluids and environmental services, wireline, well services, geomechanics, and completions.

The project successfully met or exceeded all targets for the initial phase of development while setting new drilling and completions performance standards on the NCS. Ongoing operations will add one water injector and one oil producer to the total number of wells drilled and completed in the predrilling phase. While remaining on schedule, the number of wells drilled and completed will be nine, more than double the original four planned for this phase.

When compared with similarly classified wells in Rushmore Reviews, the five oil-producing wells in the Ivar Aasen field are the five most efficiently completed wells on the NCS since 2007.
In terms of meters per dry hole day in wells drilled since 2010, 6 of the top 10 wells drilled were achieved by Det norske in the Ivar Aasen Field—including the first- and second-place wells—indicating a high and sustained level of operational efficiency.
