Spyder bit features both cylindrical and 3D shaped cutters for lower torque and improved bit dynamics.
Hybrid bit saves 9 rig days in challenging formations offshore Mexico
A major operator used a 16-in Spyder™ hybrid drill bit through demanding interbedded formations and drilled the entire section in a single run, eliminating two bit trips and 9 days of drilling time.
An exploration well offshore Mexico required drilling through a complex sequence of interbedded shale, sandstone, and conglomerates. Previous wells had required multiple bit runs due to low rates of penetration, resulting in increased rig time and opex. The operator was seeking a solution to drill the entire 900-m [2,950-ft] section in a single run and thus minimize operating time and reduce overall project costs.
SLB recommended its Spyder hybrid drill bit, which combines the strengths of fixed cutter and roller cone bit designs. It leverages roller cones to prefracture formations, enabling the fixed cutter structure to efficiently shear and remove rock. Strategic placement of cutting elements on the roller cones reduces torque and further enhances drilling performance.
The Spyder bit was deployed in the target section and drilled from shoe to section depth in a single run. The operator saved 9 days of rig time compared with offset wells, significantly improving project economics and establishing a new standard for drilling efficiency in the field.
