Retrievable bridge plug improves offshore well intervention reliability

Published: 03/19/2026

SLB provided a robust solution by deploying the 2.62in OD SIMextra retrievable bridge plug, engineered specifically for challenging debrisladen, and restricteddiameter environments. The plugs design enabled it to pass smoothly through the 2.813in ID nipple profile while delivering a reliable, gastight seal throughout the tree repair. To further mitigate debris risks, the SIMextra plug was run together with an integrated junk catcher, ensuring debris was captured before it could impede retrieval.

The operation was completed efficiently in just two runs—one to set the plug and one for retrieval. The SIMextra plug’s V0‑rated sealing system, segmented slip architecture, and active retraction mechanism enabled seamless recovery with no complications. The customer avoided the extended downtime typically caused by failed retrieval attempts using competitor plugs and achieved a smooth, safe, and highly efficient intervention.

Tool OD: 2.62 in

Nipple profile ID: 2.813 in

Environment: Corrosive formation fluids containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2)

Background

An operator in the Gulf of America needed to secure a well for tree repair operations in a corrosive environment containing CO2 and H2S. Previous interventions using competitor plugs had failed during retrieval, causing costly NPT. The operator required a dependable solution capable of passing through a restricted 2.813‑in ID nipple profile.
