Shaping future leaders with traditional "dugnad"
As SLB marks 100 years, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible impact we make on our colleagues, our families, and the communities in which we operate.
A special example is our collaboration with DNT — The Norwegian Trekking Association. DNT was founded over 150 years ago to make mountains and nature accessible through a network of cabins, operated by volunteers and enthusiasts working on “dugnad”.
Dugnad—rooted in the Old Norse words for “help” or “support”—is a Norwegian tradition of collective, voluntary work performed for a shared community purpose. It's a key part of Norwegian culture, promoting community spirit and civic duty, often followed by social time with coffee and cake.
Several times a year, SLB employees from across the country step out of their daily roles and into the mountains to take part in dugnad.
Whether by splitting and stacking firewood or building wooden walkways to protect vulnerable trails, these days are about more than the work itself. They’re about teamwork under demanding conditions, care for nature, and respect for local culture. They’re about introducing the best of Norway to our international colleagues, working side-by-side, bringing the world to the mountains—and bringing Norwegian values into our workplace.
Most importantly, they’re about investing in the future: protecting the environment, supporting sustainable outdoor access, and strengthening the sense of community that defines who we are.
It makes me extra proud that our diverse and strong Young Professionals network in SLB Scandinavia has taken a leading role in the work with DNT. By encouraging early-career employees to engage, volunteer for the community, and build relationships outside of the office, we help shape the next generation of leaders into people who understand that impact goes beyond business results.
Here in Norway, our employees are offered a DNT membership as a Christmas gift—a small gesture that reflects a bigger mindset: that caring for people, nature, and society is a major part of who we are and how we work.
I'm confident the legacy of dugnad will live on. You know, why? Because it's not just our business priorities that we carry into the next century of SLB. We also carry each other.
