Over the past 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing one of the most remarkable transformations in human history: the digital revolution.

We’ve transitioned from rotary telephones to smartphones that fit in our pockets; from renting VHS tapes to streaming entire libraries of content on demand; and from labor-intensive, manual processes to automated systems that redefine efficiency and precision. This evolution has not only reshaped our personal lives but has also revolutionized industries, including energy.

In our field, the impact of digitalization has been extraordinary. I’ve seen firsthand how technology has transformed the way we approach challenges, solve problems, and deliver value. And one of the most striking examples is the rise of autonomous drilling.

Just recently, we achieved the significant milestone of deploying the first Level 3 autonomous drilling solution in deepwater. This breakthrough was only possible because of our ability to integrate advanced digital workflows, including tools for well planning, real-time advisory systems, and autonomous directional drilling.

The results? Drilling speed increased by 19%, communication delays were reduced by 43%, and well placement accuracy improved by 40%.

There’s no denying that digital-first solutions are enabling us to redefine what’s possible, even in the most complex environments. But this success also shows what’s possible when we combine local insight with global innovation—when we take a “glocal” approach.

This approach harnesses the best in global expertise to address unique regional challenges and create lasting regional impact. It’s a dynamic outlook that, when coupled with our digital and technical abilities, empowers us to make a profound difference for communities around the world.

As I reflect on advancements like these, I’m reminded of the incredible journey we’ve been on, not just over the past 30 years, but over the past century. For this year, SLB celebrates its 100th anniversary.

This milestone is a celebration of the people, partnerships, and technologies that have brought us to where we are today. And as we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to progress, and to shaping a more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive energy landscape.
