ECOTROL HT

High-temperature filtration-control additive

Schlumberger Oilfield Services

ECOTROL HT filtration-control additive can be used in all oil- or synthetic-based mud systems to provide HPHT fluid loss control up to 500 degF [260 degC]. This product readily disperses into a fluid system through standard mixing equipment, thus minimizing the potential for polymer 'fish-eyes.'

Typical Physical Properties
Physical appearance Granular solid
Color White
Specific gravity 1.03
Solubility Nonsoluble in water; soluble in polar and nonpolar solvents

Applications

ECOTROL HT filtration-control additive is added at concentrations between 2 and 4 lbm/bbl [5.7 and 11.41 kg/m3] depending on the fluid-loss-control requirements and the bottomhole static temperature. In some cases, higher concentrations of ECOTROL HT additive will be required for an efficient filtration control.

ECOTROL HT additive has been modified to provide superior high shear stability minimizing polymer degradation for extreme HPHT applications.

When used in combination with the proper concentration and particle size of bridging agents for the formation drilled, ECOTROL HT additive improves the quality and thickness of the filtercake and reduces the spurt loss tested with the permeability plugging apparatus.

Advantages

  • Reduces HPHT fluid loss in applications with temperatures up to 500 degF
  • Improves filtercake quality when used in combination with proper bridging agents
  • Easily mixes through the mixing hopper with less tendency to agglomerate (fish-eyes)

Limitations

  • Overtreatment can cause increased viscosity in a high-density fluid
  • Pilot testing is suggested prior to adding to the active system

Toxicity and handling

Bioassay information is available upon request. Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions described in the safety data sheet.

Packaging and storage

ECOTROL HT additive is packaged in 33.1 lbm [15 kg] multiwall paper sacks. Store in dry, well-ventilated area. Keep container closed. Store away from incompatibles. Follow safe warehousing practices regarding palletizing, banding, shrink-wrapping, and stacking.
