The Adapt™ universal lift-ready production tree combines the tubing spool and production tree into one unit that remains in place across frac, flowback, production, and workovers, eliminating the multiple rig-up and rig-down cycles of conventional configurations. Moreover permanent flowlines can be installed before well completion, independent of the lift method. The results are reduced NPT, footprint, and risk; greater operating efficiency and flexibility; lower capex and opex; and shorter time to first production.

The single compact spool integrating the tubing spool and production tree uses an internal-latch tubing hanger with a testable dual barrier. During completion, the well can be hydraulically fractured through the spool with a dummy tubing hanger in place; frac pressures up to 15,000 psi can be monitored through any outlet. After fracturing is complete, the dummy hanger is removed, tubing is run, and the well is completed to flow through the tubing or annulus—both flow paths being integral to the same spool.

Because annulus access and the production wing share one body, the well can transition between conventional and annular gas lift or accommodate plunger lift, rod lift, or an ESP without reconfiguring surface flowlines. Permanent flowlines are installed before the well is completed, and workover BOPs can be installed without removing the tree, hence the spool remains in place through frac, flowback, production, and workovers.

What does it replace?

The Adapt universal production tree replaces the conventional tubing spool and vertical production tree (Christmas tree) arrangement that has long been standard on US unconventional wells.

With the conventional configuration, a well is completed by

  • landing a tubing hanger in the wellhead
  • installing a tubing spool—a component that is expensive and adds height to the overall stack—which latches to the wellhead and provides landing and orientation features
  • installing a vertical production tree.

The stacked assembly requires scaffolding for manual valve operation and forces repeated rig-up and rig-down procedures between various phases of the well's life cycle. It necessitates temporary frac equipment and long-term frac valve rentals during stimulation, a flowback tree during cleanup, and removal and reinstallation of the production tree for workovers, each transition increasing NPT, wellsite exposure, and cost.

In contrast, the Adapt universal production tree consolidates the tubing spool and production tree into a single compact spool, with a dual-barrier internal-latch tubing hanger. By keeping the completion accessible through a horizontal outlet, it removes the need to pull and reconfigure surface equipment between frac, flowback, production, and workover. As a result, it eliminates the long-term frac valve rentals, flowback tree, scaffolding, and repeated flowline reconfiguration that the conventional tubing-spool-and-tree approach depends upon in high-intervention unconventional operations.
