Automated tank cleanup provides big savings in the Gulf of Mexico

SLB used its M-I SWACO ATC™ automatic tank-cleaning technology with media-driven tools (TCMs) that rotate in a preprogrammed pattern to clean all surfaces. For slop reclamation, the system deploys diaphragm pumps to reclaim all slop volumes, enabling the cleaning fluid to be recycled on a constant basis, and reducing cleaning time, waste, and worker exposure. When compared with manual cleanup, the operation was 60% faster (10 vs. 25 days) with a 95% reduction in CSE (1 vs. 25 days) and a 68% reduction in water use (32 m3 vs. ~100 m3).

ATC is a mark of M-I L.L.C., an SLB company.

Background

A major operator in the Gulf of Mexico needed to clean mud and treatment pits to prepare them for the next phase of the drilling cycle. With traditional methods taking too long and risking HSE exposure, the operator asked SLB to deploy its automated cleaning solution that reduces cleaning time, confined-space entry (CSE), and slop volume.
