Maximizing well value in CO2 storage: Well design and construction case study

Wells are fundamental to enable project objectives in all aspects of geological carbon storage, including, but not limited to, site characterization, carbon dioxide (CO2) injection, site monitoring and pressure management. It is critical that all wells for a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) program are cost effective and fully fit-for-purpose. Based on the first CO2 storage project in Brazil, this paper presents the process to achieving an optimum well design for stratigraphic, monitoring and injector wells, the challenges faced, and the decisions made. This paper focuses on the initial design allowances for the stratigraphic well and its repurposing strategy.
Repurposing a stratigraphic characterization well enabled the project to reduce the total number of wells and optimize project cost. The different solutions and technologies that were evaluated, the analysis, the constraints that were factored in, and the design and decision-making process provide a solid base for implementation in future projects.
