SLB’s ESP pump technology increases Permian production

A Permian Basin operator was unable to meet a 2,200-BFPD production target after a competitor’s electric submersible pump (ESP) system underperformed and failed after four months. SLB used High Rise™ ESP series pumps featuring a High Rise 17.5 pump with Oculus™ technology to increase production by an average of 150 BOPD and reduce workover, installation, and power-related costs.

Achieve target production

The operator needed to increase production from a well averaging 450 BOPD, which was below the expected oil production rate. The previous 3,000-BFPD ESP system did not achieve the 2,200-BFPD production target and failed after four months, creating deferred production and workover risk.

The objective was to restore production performance while reducing system complexity.

Increased production and avoided deferred revenue

SLB installed a High Rise 17.5 pump with Oculus technology. The target production rate was near the extended upper end of the 17.5 flow range, enabling the operator to downsize the pump while still meeting production objectives.

The High Rise pump increased production by an average of 150 BOPD and increased daily revenue by $9,000*. By avoiding 10 days of deferred production for a workover, the operator gained $171,000* in revenue.

More than doubled run life and reduced workover cost

The High Rise pumps more than doubled run life compared with the competitor system. This performance saved $200,000 in workover costs.

Reduced equipment, emissions, and power demand

Only three High Rise pump sections were required to achieve the target production rate, compared with four sections in the competitor ESP system. Fewer pump sections reduced installed equipment and supported faster installation.

Installing three sections instead of five comparable pump sections reduced carbon emissions by 1 ton per install**.
The fewer number of pump sections also reduced heavy metals by an average of 20%**.

The greater lift per unit length of pump, at the same or less horsepower, reduced power consumption and electrical utility costs.
