Enhancing gas recovery with underbalanced live descaling solutions

An underbalanced CT intervention integrating the ACTive Xtreme™ CT real-time rugged downhole measurement tool, CT acquisition and monitoring software, and enclosed surface handling enabled live iron sulfide (FeS) scale removal in subhydrostatic sour gas wells. Real‑time pressure control and cleanout optimization improved intervention performance, resulting in up to 30% higher production and more than 20% reduction in intervention cost compared with conventional approaches.

An operator in the Middle East required a reliable live-well intervention to remove FeS scale from subhydrostatic, sour gas wells. The operation needed to maintain underbalanced conditions throughout CT descaling while ensuring secure surface handling of solids, liquids, and HS.

The operator faced multiple technical and operational challenges:

  • Sustaining underbalanced conditions during CT descaling in sour gas wells
  • Maintaining control of annular pressure to avoid formation damage
  • Managing FeS solids and produced fluids while securely handling HS at surface

Conventional slightly overbalanced or foam-based descaling approaches increased risk, cost, and operational complexity.

SLB delivered an integrated, custom-fit underbalanced descaling solution combining real-time downhole intelligence, digital decision support, and enclosed surface equipment.

Key elements included:

  • ACTive Xtreme tool
Ruggedized fiber-optic telemetry enabled real-time monitoring of annular pressure and downhole tool performance. This capability supported precise pressure control, helping sustain underbalanced conditions throughout the descaling operation.
  • CT acquisition and monitoring software
Real-time calculations of ECD and flowing pressure at the perforations supported informed adjustments to cleanout parameters, improving operational efficiency.
  • Enclosed surface well testing package
A custom-fit solids separation unit and enclosed surface equipment enabled secure handling of solids, liquids, and sour gas. This configuration reduced exposure risk and improved surface operational reliability.

The underbalanced CT descaling operation delivered measurable improvements compared with conventional approaches:

  • More than 20% reduction in intervention cost compared with slightly overbalanced CT descaling
  • Approximately 30% increase in gas production compared with CT foam-based descaling

By integrating real-time telemetry, digital workflow optimization, and enclosed surface systems, SLB helped the operator improve production while reducing cost and operational risk. The outcome demonstrates how tailored live‑well intervention solutions can improve performance in technically demanding sour gas environments.
