Background
The Eclipse Resources Corporation needed to drill multiple horizontal wells with lateral length over 15,000 ft in the Ohio Utica Shale. A primary concern was minimizing tortuosity for the 8½-in wellbore to stay within the productive zone of interest—without sacrificing drilling performance. Schlumberger deployed a PowerDrive Orbit* RSS because it has a proven record of reliability. Additionally, the RSS incorporated features from PowerDrive vorteX* powered RSS, providing higher rpm at the bit, along with stabilization options for high-performance directional drilling.

PowerDrive Orbit Sets Multiple Extended-Reach Drilling Records for Eclipse Resources

Schlumberger drilled 23 superlateral wells averaging 18,239 ft, setting US land records for longest horizontal lateral length and total well length

overflow image
In the past 18 months, Schlumberger drilled 18 superlateral wells, averaging 18,537 ft in horizontal length. The PowerDrive Orbit RSS and a bit certified for directional drilling minimized wellbore tortuosity and maintained trajectory within the target zone. Drilling performance resulted in a state and US land drilling records. At 20,632 ft, Well 10 set records for the longest lateral and longest single-run lateral. Another well earned the longest total well depth at 30,493 ft. On-bottom ROP during the campaign averaged 171 ft/h.
