The operator successfully drilled the entire lateral section in a single bit run, while achieving record ROP. This well exceeded the footage from the previous run by 303 ft [92 m] and improved ROP 37%. The hold inclination and azimuth (HIA) capability of the PowerDrive Orbit system enabled drilling all the way to TD. This was the longest lateral in North America Land, and the longest single bit run in the world.

Background

An operator in Ohio needed to drill the 19,055-ft [5,808-m] horizontal of an extended-reach land well in a single bit run with the minimum possible tortuosity. Working with Schlumberger, the operator decided to use a PowerDrive Orbit rotary steerable system with the TeleScope high-speed telemetry while-drilling service and a bit from Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company.
