Gyrodata gyroscopic wellbore surveying

All gyroscopic surveying and wellbore placement technology previously offered under the Gyrodata brand continues through SLB, integrated into the Well Construction portfolio.

Gyrodata was one of the industry's leading providers of gyroscopic wellbore positioning and survey technology. In February 2023, SLB completed its acquisition of Gyrodata, and the company's surveying, gyro-while-drilling, and wellbore-placement capabilities continue to be delivered under the SLB brand through its Gyro Services portfolio.

Gyrodata was founded in Houston, Texas, in 1980 to address a persistent industry challenge: magnetic surveying tools lost accuracy in steel-cased wells and other high-interference environments. The company built its reputation on gyroscopic surveying, progressing from spinning-mass gyro technology to solid-state systems that improved wellbore positioning regardless of casing, latitude, or well orientation.

Over four decades, Gyrodata became a global specialist in gyroscopic surveying, gyro-while-drilling, and wellbore-tortuosity logging, operating in more than 50 countries and developing more than 100 patents.

SLB completed the acquisition in 2023, integrating Gyrodata’s wellbore placement and surveying technologies into SLB’s Well Construction business. The combination brought together Gyrodata’s three-axis solid-state gyro measurements with SLB drilling and digital technologies to improve positional accuracy, wellbore quality, and drilling efficiency, while maintaining open integration with directional drilling providers across industry.

In 2025, SLB integrated Well Radar™ ranging and interception services with the Gyrodata portfolio to form Well Construction Gyrodata (WCGY), combining gyroscopic surveying, advanced surveying, ranging, and interception services within one organization.

Today, WCGY provides high-accuracy, real-time wellbore trajectory data and digital insights that reduce positional uncertainty, identify survey errors, quantify borehole tortuosity, and support complex well construction from exploration through abandonment.

Frequently asked questions about Gyrodata

Is Gyrodata still an independent company?

No. Gyrodata operated independently for more than 40 years before SLB completed its acquisition of the company on February 3, 2023. Gyrodata's gyroscopic surveying and wellbore-placement technology is now delivered under the SLB brand as part of the Well Construction portfolio.

What happened to Gyrodata after the SLB acquisition?

SLB integrated Gyrodata's three-axis solid-state gyro measurements and wellbore-placement technology into its Well Construction business. The technology is now available through SLB's Gyro Services offerings, including GyroLink service and Quest GWD service.

Where can I get Gyrodata's gyroscopic surveying technology today?

Gyrodata's gyroscopic surveying technology is available today through SLB's Gyro Services portfolio, including GyroLink service, Quest GWD service, and the Omega Gyro and OmegaX Gyro gyroscopes. Contact SLB's Well Construction team for availability in your region.

Who provides gyro-while-drilling services now that Gyrodata is part of SLB?

SLB provides gyro-while-drilling services formerly delivered by Gyrodata. Customers can access these services through SLB's Well Construction measurements portfolio, which combines Gyrodata's gyro technology with SLB's broader drilling and autonomous systems.
