The operator’s goal

The operator sought to drill a section consisting of highly interbedded limestone with shale in one run.

What was tried first

A conventional bit had experienced impact damage on the shoulder after drilling the section in two runs with an average ROP of 75.4 ft/h.

What Schlumberger recommended

AxeBlade ridged diamond element bits with Axe Ultra elements have higher impact resistance, prolonging bit life and improving instantaneous ROP.

What was achieved

Using an AxeBlade bit with Axe Ultra elements, the operator drilled the entire lateral in one run at an average ROP of 89.3 ft/h, an 18% increase over the ROP achieved with conventional drill bits. The bit came out with minor wear on the shoulder and saved two days of drilling.
