Operator maintains a 50-ft separation from offset well using ranging and interception services

A major operator used Well Radar™ ranging and interception services in a deepwater environment to safely steer away from a close range offset well while reducing impact to drilling operations and preventing additional survey time.

The operator wanted to monitor the distance between a drilling well and the offset well casing and maintain 41-ft center-to-center spacing at 8,500-ft MD in a 26-in section. Conventional passive magnetic ranging (PMR) technology requires frequent stops to take surveys, increasing risk of washout and stuck pipe. Definitive dynamic surveys (DDS) and real-time monitoring while drilling would prevent interruptions of pump cycles with high performance and safety.

The operator used Well Radar ranging and interception services with DDS while drilling every two minutes, reducing survey time to zero. Survey results helped bp determine the offset well distance and direction while drilling and without impacting the rig time. A total of 16 ranging shots confirmed the distance between the wells ranged between 41 ft and 72 ft from the offset well. Despite the larger distance, the signal from the offset well enabled keeping a safe separation. The results matched the planned anticollision scan based on well surveys and surface coordinates. The operator continued drilling with a 50-ft separation.
