Increasing ROP offshore Qatar by efficiently removing heavy downhole vibrations

Using DrillSync™ Soft Torque and DrillSync Adaptive AutoDriller, enabled the operator to significantly improve drilling speed and efficiency offshore by removing downhole vibrations and surface control dysfunctions, resulting in improved ROP.

Offshore Qatar, heavy stick-slip vibrations damaged the MWD tool, forcing the operator to trip out of the well twice, which delayed progress. After tripping back in, drilling resumed, but vibrations caused the drill bit to dull quickly, reducing its effectiveness and speed. This prompted another trip out to replace the worn bit, further prolonging the operation. Ultimately, these issues resulted in substantial delays, taking 10 days to reach just 8,500 ft. As a result, a solution was required that would eliminate downhole vibrations and improve ROP.

By implementing DrillSync Soft Torque and DrillSync Adaptive AutoDriller, which are part of the DrillSync automated controls platform, the operator improved drilling quality by removing downhole vibrations and preventing surface control dysfunctions, leading to better ROP. DrillSync Soft Torque acts as a passive vibration damper while DrillSync Adaptive AutoDriller offers real-time feedback and dynamic control for optimal performance and increased ROP. The faster drilling process meant less fuel consumption for the jackup rig, improving sustainability by achieving more drilling footage with a reduced carbon footprint.
