Mudgard filter protects drilling assemblies from rock, scale, and other material that may cause damage.
A major operator in the Middle East aimed to set a record by drilling an extended-reach well to 52,000 ft. To prevent harmful debris from obstructing the BHA or the drill bit—potentially leading to an early bit trip or BHA replacement—the Mudgard filter was included as part of the proposed BHA.
The Mudgard filter was incorporated into the BHA as a high-capacity downhole filter to capture foreign materials, addressing the absence of surface control measures that frequently resulted in BHA trips caused by jamming from downhole debris. By effectively removing the debris, drilling operations continued smoothly, allowing the customer to successfully achieve their goal of reaching 52,000 ft on schedule. More than a low-cost alternative, the Mudgard filter prevents washouts caused by high-pressure drops and erosion flow paths, thanks to its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) design. Additionally, it helps remove debris that could disrupt downhole surveys.
