This enables a fully integrated evaluation workflow. It automates simulation execution on the FDPlan solution compute engine, integrating subsurface, surface, and economic analyses into a single application. This empowers users to independently run simulations once simulation engineers have prepared a base case, accelerating planning and decision-making while preserving the critical role of expert input.

It supports automated data flow and orchestration across domains, ensuring consistency and traceability.

How does Intersect simulator compute work in the FDPlan solution?

  • Start with a base simulation case
    A reservoir engineer creates a base case in Petrel software, which includes all the necessary parameters. This model is then published to the REDS, making it accessible to the FDPlan solution.
  • Connect the FDPlan solution to the simulation model
    In FDPlan™ solution, users create a data source that links to the simulation model stored in REDS. This provides access to the core simulation file, commonly referred to as the .afi file.

  • Use the field layout to prepare simulation inputs
    The FDPlan solution takes the field layout, which includes well trajectories and other planning details, and automatically generates the required simulation input files:
    • Well trajectory data (.dev file)
    • Depth information for each well (.ev file)

These files are appended to the core file to form a complete simulation setup.

  • Describe new wells with grid independence
    For each well defined in the field layout, the FDPlan solution adds a special file to describe the reservoir setup (.ixf file). It uses the gridless option, allowing wells to be placed without a simulation grid.
  • Configure simulation logic
    The FDPlan™ solution uses a CSV file to define simulation rules and constraints. This is converted and added to the simulation setup.
  • Update reporting parameters
    The FDPlan solution automatically adjusts simulation reporting settings based on the number of new wells, ensuring accurate tracking of outputs and outcomes.

Enhanced agility in field development planning

Users don’t need to manually prepare multiple simulation files and field development strategies; the FDPlan solution does it for them. Once the base case is ready, any user can run simulations directly in the FDPlan solution.

Simulation engineers remain essential to developing the base model, which involves defining parameters, performing history matching, and ensuring model quality. Once this foundation is in place, users can run simulations independently in the FDPlan solution, reducing reliance on engineers' time for routine execution while still benefiting from their expertise to review outcomes and address any issues.
