The PowerDrive Orbit RSS provided a curve with up to 7° dogleg severity (DLS). The entire lateral was drilled in a single run with with less equipment damage than anticipated. This single-run lateral set a record for wells in the area with an ROP of 27 m/h.

Background

Canadian Natural Resources needed to drill a 3,000-m lateral while staying within the pay zone, which meant withstanding the high shock and vibration of the Montney Formation. The well plan required real-time communication with the RSS throughout the 3,022-m lateral section. Canadian Natural Resource’s standard plan was to drill the lateral in two bit runs, while struggling with sliding, equipment challenges, and lower ROPs. A BHA incorporating the xBolt G2 service was chosen to use alongside a DynaForce motor, a PowerDrive Orbit RSS, and XPC connections.
